Description
When you turn the key, an electromagnet within the body engages and pulls out a rod to which the pinion is linked. The starting motor rotates as the pinion collides with the flywheel. It causes the engine to revolve, drawing in the air and fuel.
The starting drive incorporates an over-running clutch (one-way clutch) that protects the starter when the engine starts. An electric motor begins rotational motion before an internal combustion engine can power itself. It connects and disconnects the revolving starting motor shaft from the mechanism for cranking.
