Description
Pressurized combustion gases cannot enter the oil sump because piston rings provide a seal between the piston and cylinder wall. By preventing too much oil from entering the combustion chamber and burning, they also control the amount of oil used. Maximum engine power and efficiency depend on functioning rings.
Rings must be able to freely float in their slots within the piston to maintain contact with the cylinder. Engine failure can result from rings binding in the piston, which is typically brought on by either a build-up of combustion products or a breakdown of the lubricating oil.
Key Features:
- It seals the combustion chamber to reduce gas leakage into the crankcase.
- It improves the piston-to-cylinder wall heat transfer.
- Ensuring that there is an adequate amount of oil between the piston and the cylinder wall
- Oil from the cylinder walls is scraped back into the sump to control engine oil consumption.
