Description
A mercury relay (also known as a mercury contactor or mercury displacement relay) is a relay that uses mercury as the switching element. They are utilized as high-current switches or contactors in applications where contact deterioration from constant cycling would be an issue with traditional relay contacts. Mercury relays are essentially outdated because of environmental concerns regarding mercury toxicity, while contemporary enclosed ones still have usage. Solid-state relays are increasingly being used to replace them.
Key Features:
-
allows for the switching of larger currents for a large number of cycles with a minimal control current
-
Because the contacts are sealed, oxidation of the contact points is not possible
-
Contacts remain clean, and even if an internal arc occurs, the contact surfaces renew with each operation, ensuring that they do not wear out.
