Description
A thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve in an outboard's cooling system that opens or closes depending on the temperature. The cooling water circulation through the outboard is interrupted when the thermostat is closed, raising the motor's working temperature. The thermostat opens when the temperature rises, allowing coolant to circulate through the outboard and lowering the operating temperature. The cooling water in the block is held in place by a thermostat until it reaches the temperature stipulated by the engine. It then opens to let the water out before it becomes too hot and causes the outboard to overheat. The engine will run at its intended temperature if the thermostat is working correctly. Internal condensation, which introduces moisture into the crankcase oil, will be prevented by keeping the fluids and metals at equal temperatures. It will help the piston rings seat properly, preventing fuel from leaking into the oil.
