Description
In static or rotational applications, dog clutches are specialized claw couplings. Dog clutches use intervention to join two spinning shafts or other rotating components such as gears. The most common application is a constant-mesh gearbox. This clutch engages using interference rather than friction. Both shafts rotate at the same speed without sliding or clutch wear. It has two round plates connected to the drive shaft or gear and the other to the shaft being driven, making up this clutch form. One of the plates has a series of equally spaced protrusions machined onto its face. The other plate has a series of identically spaced recesses carved into its face. The protrusions match or fit into the recesses when the two plates are brought together, essentially uniting the shafts and transferring rotational motion from one to the other. Dog clutches, unlike friction clutches, cannot be utilized to adjust torque. The clutch's two sections are built so that one pushes the other and both revolve at the same speed, never slipping.
Key Features:
-
There is no slip of friction after the clutch is engaged.
-
There is substantially less heat generation since there is no friction.
-
It is less expensive than a friction clutch with comparable torque capacity.
-
Meets or exceeds the original equipment quality.
-
