Without a power steering cap, the power steering fluid leaks, and the steering wheel gets harder and harder to spin. A power steering system is a hydraulic system in which the pressure rises with the vehicle's engine speed. A power steering system leak caused by a missing cap can damage the timing belt, other drive belts, the air conditioning compressor, different electronics, and especially the belt that drives the water pump. Before starting a vehicle again after a power steering fluid leak caused by a missing cap, thoroughly clean the underside of the hood and the engine compartment. Replace the power steering cap and any lost power steering fluid.
